Divisé en trois sections, cet ancien livre nous en apprend davantage sur la boisson la plus consommée au monde. La première section traite du thé et de sa production, la deuxième énumère les ustensiles utilisés pour sa production et la troisième aborde plusieurs sujets : de la dégustation du thé aux anciennes archives qui existaient à son sujet dans la Chine antique. Lu Yu (733-804) était également connu comme le « saint chinois du thé » et son œuvre comme le « livre sacré du thé », ce qui constitue un exemple clair de la fascination que les Chinois éprouvaient pour le thé. À cette époque, l'apparition de cette magnifique œuvre, soutenue par l'empereur Taizong, provoqua une révolution et apporta de nombreux nouveaux adeptes au thé, car après sa publication, boire du thé devint une tradition nationale, qui, née à l'origine dans le sud de la Chine, s'étendit également aux États du nord.
