Diviso in tre sezioni, questo antico libro ci insegna di più sulla bevanda più consumata al mondo. Nella prima sezione si parla del tè e della sua produzione, nella seconda si elencano gli utensili usati per la sua produzione e, nella terza, si trattano vari argomenti: dalla valutazione del tè fino agli antichi archivi che su di esso esistevano nell'Antica Cina. Lu Yu (733-804) fu anche conosciuto come il "santo cinese del tè" e la sua opera come il "libro sacro del tè", il che rappresenta un chiaro esempio della fascinazione che i cinesi provavano per il tè. In quell'epoca, l'apparizione di questa magnifica opera, sostenuta dall'imperatore Taisung, produsse una rivoluzione e portò molti nuovi adepti al tè, poiché dopo la sua pubblicazione, bere il tè divenne una tradizione nazionale, che nata originariamente nel sud della Cina, si estese anche agli stati del nord.
