Dividido em três secções, este antigo livro ensina-nos mais sobre a bebida mais consumida no mundo. Na primeira secção fala-se do chá e da sua produção, na segunda enumeram-se os utensílios usados para a sua produção e, na terceira, tratam-se vários temas: desde a valorização do chá até aos antigos arquivos que sobre ele existiam na Antiga China. Lu Yu (733-804) também foi conhecido como o "santo chinês do chá" e a sua obra como o "livro sagrado do chá", o que constitui um claro exemplo da fascinação que os chineses sentiam pelo chá. Naquela época, o aparecimento desta magnífica obra, apoiada pelo imperador Taizong, produziu uma revolução e trouxe muitos novos adeptos ao chá, já que após a sua edição, beber chá tornou-se uma tradição nacional, que, tendo surgido originalmente no sul da China, se estendeu também aos estados do norte.
